Dying Winds

Like two battered marionettes, Harold and Mary Rose struggled against the layer of snow that covered them to return to a standing position. The wind slithered like tongues of white fire across the smooth surface of the barren and desolate landscape in front of them. They fought to stay on their feet and keep their eyes open. The piercing cold penetrated deep inside them all over again, freezing even their thoughts and words. The pressure on his bladder brought Harold back to the present, but he couldn’t move. His feet felt welded to the crust of ice and snow. He raked his gaze over the plain, hoping to see something that broke the monotony. But there was nothing. Only white.

Mary Rose grabbed Harold’s arm and stepped forward. As they turned to study the landscape behind them, frost flew at them as if trying to tear them apart. The ratty shelter continued to rustle and shake. Mary Rose closed her eyes to protect them from the razor-sharp needles of ice. The icy wind ran through her hair, whipping it like it was a tattered flag.

“Why did he rescue us?” Mary Rose wondered aloud.

Harold looked with concern at his wife’s purple lips, her papery skin, and the bones protruding from her face. He held on to her, not knowing what to say. He was desperately confused and dispirited.

“Let’s go back in.” Harold supported Mary Rose so she wouldn’t lose her balance and fall on the tent.

Harold bent down and pushed aside the opening. Mary Rose looked around her one last time, and something caught her eye.

“Harold! I saw something!”

Harold immediately returned to her side. Minutes passed, but they saw nothing.

“I’m sure something was there.” Mary Rose’s eyes remained fixed on a bank of snow that kept changing shape in the wind.

“Maybe it was . . .”

Harold couldn’t finish his thought; he was seized by violent coughs. Mary Rose pulled him against her. Then the wind subsided.

Harold regained control over his coughing fit and eventually looked up. A comforting ray of morning sun filtered through the dissipating clouds, tinging the expanse of snow with a warm pink patina. The sun shone in the distance, a perfect circle of light. Harold and Mary Rose could feel the delicate rays warming them, easing the ice, desperation, and loneliness. Finally seeing the sun again momentarily made them feel like they were safely back home, like it was the reassuring beacon of a lighthouse after long, desperate nights lost in a storm. The brume continued to disperse. In front of them, illuminated by the intense red hue of dawn, they saw a large grouping of mounds rising out of the snow.
